Thomas Franklin Campbell (later years)

Mary Anna's uncle, Thomas Franklin Campbell, was the eldest of her mother's younger brothers. He was named after his grandfather, Thomas B. Campbell, a patriot in the Revolutionary War in North Carolina. Thomas (also known as "T.F.") was born and raised in Rankin County, Mississippi and moved to Louisiana to join Mary Anna's family after their move. At the outset of the Mexican-American War, he joined the masses of young men from Louisiana who volunteered to protect the fledgling state of Texas, which lay on the western border of Louisiana, not far from his home in Concordia Parish.

After returning from the war, he enrolled in Bethany College. He graduated in 1852, along with Alexander Campbell, Jr.. A few years later he was awarded an honorary degree by Alexander Campbell. He went on to practice law, the ministry, and education, moving westward until he finally arrived in Oregon, where he became the president of a college.

Jane Eliza Campbell came from another branch of the Campbell family; she was a cousin of Alexander Campbell. She lived with the Campbell family, serving as a teacher for the youngest two children, Decima and William. After her marriage to Thomas Franklin, she continued teaching at his side, while raising their family. (Photo in article below.)
