Preface-The Bethany College Archives at T.W. Phillips Memorial Library

T.W. Phillips Memorial Library, Bethany College

I climbed the stairs, and looked to the left. I went a few more steps up to a little lobby. Its purpose was slightly obscured by a display of African artifacts. But behind these doors lies an abundance of all things Bethany. Yearbooks, photographs, files holding all kinds of memorabilia. Your own senior project is likely hidden away in one of those rooms. The book that holds your freshman signature from the matriculation ceremony. Memories even you may have forgotten.

A tiny chapel lies behind the showcase of artifacts, for this is a place of reverence. To the right is a dark room, curtained to keep out any hint of light. The sun is a destructive enemy to ancient artifacts. When the archivist unlocks this door you are offered entry into the history of Alexander Campbell and his family. Oil portraits line the walls. His bust sits on a stand. Books line the walls. Files of letters and journals are safely tucked away into drawers.

Anyone who enters is in for a journey of discovery.
